PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

One of the commonest problems treated in our clinic is pain between the shoulder blades. Most people have it at some time in their lives. This isn’t normally a serious injury but it can be very painful.

SHOULDER BLADE PAIN

Pain and stiffness presents between the shoulder blades and this pain can radiate around to the front of the chest, it tends to be worse in the morning and can be aggravated by stress, sitting, driving and computer work.

This type of injury normally occurs because the ribs and vertebral joints get stiff and or locked up. Pain often increases when you bend your head forward or look to the left or right, stretching your arms and twisting (for eg. putting a shirt or sweater on) can also cause pain. If very severe the injury can even hurt when you take in a deep breath and it may also cause arm pain and numbness. You may often have associated symptoms such as tingling in the hands, numbness, heart burn and hot and cold flushes.

The mid back is far more stable than the neck and lumbar spine because of the stabilising effect of the rib cage. The dorsal area with vertebra and ribs has many joints (12 x 8 = 96) in total, each with supporting ligaments and muscles, making it a complex area. When we have a problem in this area the small muscles attached to the vertebrae and ribs tighten and prevent the joints from moving correctly. This is a vicious circle and this loss of joint motion in turn causes the muscles, ligaments and tendons to become even tighter causing further pain and stiffness.

TREATMENT FOR PAIN BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES

Because of the number of joints in the area, spinal manipulation can often provide very quick relief compared to other types of treatment, as spinal manipulation can restore the joint motion back to normal quicker than other types of treatment. At Peverell Chiropractic Clinic we successfully treat pain between the shoulder blades on a daily basis.

We restore the normal function in your dorsal vertebra and rib joints via Chiropractic manipulation and use deep tissue work and massage on the tight surrounding muscles and fascia, this may involve using Soft Tissue Therapy, Myofascial release, IASTM (Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation) and Kinesio taping. You will also be given mobility exercises for your mid / upper back and ribs.
