KNEE PAIN AND STIFFNESS

KNEE PAIN AND STIFFNESS

Knee injuries are very common occurring regularly in sports and athletic participation, they may also occur with slips, trips and falls.

KNEE PAIN AND STIFFNESS

Knee pain is normally due to three factors:

  1. Damage to one or more of the soft tissue structures that surround and stabilize/cushion the knee joint, ie. the muscles, ligaments, the knee capsule, tendons, and menisci (cartilages).
  2. Trauma to the bones forming the joint, and occasionally from infection to the knee joint or surrounding structures.
  3. Age related, wear and tear, affecting the joint. Osteoarthritis of the knee, this is often due to a lot of sports activities when young.

TREATMENT

Most of the knee injuries we treat in our Plymouth chiropractic and sports injury clinic are sports related as these often involve a lot of twisting and sudden movements. The commonest injuries we treat are Runners Knee, Medial meniscal and Collateral ligament injuries (these cause pain on the inside of the knee) and Patella Tendonitis problems (These cause pain under and/or below the knee cap). Symptoms of knee arthritis can be helped and are also treated in our clinic.

Knee injuries are characterised by pain, swelling and stiffness in and around the knee. For the most effective rehabilitation these injuries need to managed correctly, this may involve soft tissue therapy, myofascial release, instrument assisted soft tissue therapy (IASTM), ice, taping, manipulation, mobilisation, exercise therapy and massage.
